Telemedicine Services

York Hospital offers Telemedicine Services through walk-in care and through primary care with our providers. Both options will provide you with a secure, online telemedicine visit, so you’ll be treated, consulted and advised while remaining in the comfort of your own home.

Telemedicine through walk-in care

York Hospital Virtual Care is a convenient online care service for common conditions. Staffed by the same walk-in providers you would see in our clinics, all certified and credentialed according to NCQA standards. The service is offered for Maine residents and is typically available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Care is accessed through our website, here

During your appointment, your provider will review medical information regarding your concerns, diagnose, make recommendations, and at their discretion, even prescribe medication they deem helpful for you. If you receive a prescription, your provider will send it straight to your local pharmacy.

Providers will prescribe medication applicable for your individual diagnosis. Please note that by law narcotics/opiates (such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, etc.) cannot be prescribed via telehealth visits.

Convenient for urgent needs

You can access care in the convenience and comfort of your own home. In addition, your condition can be treated at a lower cost compared to urgent care, the doctor’s office, or emergency rooms.

We now accept most health insurance plans and can bill insurance companies directly. You will receive a bill for your virtual care service like you would for any other York Hospital service. This bill will reflect the amount covered by your insurance and any balance remaining.

We recommend you check with your insurance company to find out what your coverage is. Some insurances include urgent care telehealth as a covered benefit. You may submit your receipt for reimbursement as you wish. Please feel free to call the York Hospital Billing Team with any questions at our toll free number: (877) 727-9691. If you are local, please call: (207) 361-3669.

Pre-appointment computer test

We recommend always testing your computer before you connect if you are accessing from a PC or laptop, however, we also have a Troubleshooting guide (add link) published on the website. (Rest assured, if there are technical difficulties, our staff will work with you on a solution).

Telemedicine via Primary Care providers

York Hospital Primary Care Provider Practices are able to offer secure online telemedicine visits so that you can be treated, consulted and advised by your provider while staying safe and comfortable at home. From any device with internet access, you can see your provider for your scheduled visit on a secure, password-protected portal.

To get started, you will need to call your provider to schedule your appointment. Your provider’s Patient Service Representative will provide instructions on next steps and how to access your Telemedicine Visit at your scheduled time.

If you need help accessing Telemedicine or your Practice Patient Portal, please call (207) 361-6902 and we will be happy to assist you.

A televisit is a virtual visit with a primary care provider or specialist at York Hospital. The visit will take place using your computer or smartphone. You and your provider will be able to see each other through video and communicate using audio on your device.  Your provider can still order any necessary lab and radiology testing and can prescribe medications if needed.

The first step is to call and schedule it with your provider. Before beginning your Telemedicine Visit, make sure that you:

  • Have an active Patient Portal account, with username and password.
  • Set aside a secure, private location
  • “Arrive early” by logging in to your Patient Portal. If you can’t access the Portal, you can also begin your appointment through the reminder link sent to your email.
  • Click “Join TeleVisit” in your patient dashboard (or email reminder).
  • Fill out any patient questionnaire, and provide requested personal information.
  • Click “Proceed” to check your computer’s speed and ability to support a Telemedicine Visit. If your computer does not have a webcam (most do), you will need to attach one.
  • Click “Start TeleVisit” to enter the virtual waiting room.
  • Your physician will begin the face-to-face telemedicine visit, and disconnect when the visit ends.

TeleVisits can be scheduled by your provider’s office staff in the same way that you would make an in-office appointment.

Your provider will be able to join the visit from their office at the practice or occasionally they may join the visit from their home office. Just like you, they are able to connect with you wherever they have a video/audio connection. All of our providers will have a secure HIPAA compliant connection to your health record during the TeleVisit.

Because the visit is virtual, you can be anywhere with a stable internet connection! As long as you have an internet or wifi connection with video/audio on your computer or smartphone, you will be able to connect with your provider. You are able to connect virtually without leaving your home!

We are currently scheduling TeleVisits with your primary care or specialty providers during our regular office hours.

Yes, we will bill your insurance company just as we would if you came into the office for your visit.
